On Durga Ashtami day, we will worship Devi Maha Gauri. She guards the welfare of all her devotees. And all their problems are solved. Devi is said to give powerful results. It is said about Goddess Durga that She rides lion. She is crowned with moon on her head. She is Kantiwali and has four arms. Devi graces us with a conch, Chakra, bow and arrow in her four arms. She has three eyes. Goddess Durga is the destroyer of the evil.

The eighth day of Navratri celebrations known as Mahashtami and is one of the most fortunate day in hinduism. It comes on the Ashtami tithi of Chaitra Masam according to the Hindu calendar. The Ashta Nayikas we called it as Eight Shaktis, are understood variously in different regions of India. Goddess Kali appeared on this day from the forehead of Mother Durga and defeated Chanda, Munda and Rakthabija . The 64 Yoginis and Ashta Nayikas are worshipped during the Durga Navarati Puja rituals on Mahashtami.

There is a tradition connected to Durga Ashtami began in North India is to honor the kanjaks in the home. A group of young and unmarried girls  (5 or 7) are requested into their respective homes to honor them. The tradition is developed on the belief that each of these young girls- kanjaks and represents the shakti – energy of Durga on earth. Group of girls are invited by washing their feet and then welcomes them into the home and then the rituals are being done as Arati and Puja. After that young girls are served with sweets and foods and then privileged with gifts.

The day also known as Vira Ashtami as there are seen to use arms or martial arts and a fasting is undertaken by many people. Weapons of Goddess Durga are worshipped on the day, and it is known ‘Astra Puja’.  Wishing all of you Happy Durga Ashtami, May Mata Durga’s grace and presence fill our lives.
